Popular Japanese series Chiikawa has a surprising appeal for adults navigating the pressures of modern life. Chiikawa first began in January 2020 as an online comic on X (Twitter) by the Japanese illustrator Nagano. She chose the platform for its immediacy, which allowed her to create panels quickly, publish quickly, and get viewers' reactions just as quickly. This was a welcomed change of pace from her day-to-day routine as an illustrator, which often required tedious and frustrating processes marred by back-to-back feedback from clients, publishers, and more before she could have anything ready for the reader’s eye. Little did she know, the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, which began in March 2020, would drive people’s attention en masse to her small feel-good project. Not long after, Chiikawa had amassed a large 1.1 million followers on the platform.

The comic, and later Netflix animated series, shares heartwarming and emotional tales of the daily lives of its titular character Chiikawa, a small white hamster, along with their best friends Hachiware the cat and Usagi the rabbit. Despite their cute childlike appearance, the friend group are navigating the perils of adulthood, trying their best to balance going to work every day and studying for certifications with misadventures like an island vacation and a music festival gone awry. Their world is both cozy and perilous, occupied by body-snatching monsters and malignant witches.

More than anything, the Chiikawa series highlights the importance of having a healthy support system. This was apparent from the first story arc in the series that was centered around Chiikawa introducing their two friends, Usagi and Hachiware, to each other. Initially Chiikawa would spend time with Usagi to go out and eat, while Hachiware was the friend that Chiikawa could spend time doing various activities with, such as arts & crafts and running errands. Slowly but surely they became a trio that completed each other, allowing them to support each other. Over time, even more characters joined the group, such as Rakko, Momonga, and more.

Chiikawa proves that profound wisdom often comes in the simplest forms. What began as a lighthearted webcomic has blossomed into a heartfelt guide for adults navigating stress, loneliness, and self-doubt. Through its endearing characters and relatable struggles, the series champions emotional resilience, the power of community, and the courage to embrace imperfection. In a fast-paced world, Chiikawa reminds audiences that healing can be found in small joys, supportive friendships, and the kindness we extend to ourselves. Sometimes, the gentlest stories carry the deepest lessons.
