‘My Timeless Timber Art’ by Bethany Ann C.: Mementos of Forest Conservation

Painter Bethany Ann C. creates small yet intricate paintings on ethically sourced timber under the name My Timeless Timber. Her paintings depict picturesque natural scenes, including forests, rolling hills, bayous, and many more. By covering each painting with resin, she ensures that every single piece will last for several human lifetimes.

Bethany Ann C.'s pieces become little keepsakes that can be passed down from generation to generation with a message that calls for the preservation of trees, woods, and other parts of nature that she has depicted in her paintings. This is why My Timeless Timber is relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, and Life on Land.

The World Wildlife Fund has noted that today’s international illegal trade in primary wood products accounts for an estimated up to 30 percent of the global timber production, making it the world’s third largest transnational organized crime. A significant portion of this is the US consumption of tropical timber, which plays a significant role in the deforestation and land degradation of tropical countries.

The illicit trade has emerged to meet the increasing demand for processed wood products such as sawn timber, pulpwood, wood boards, and wood-based panels, all extremely popular home and furniture materials for the past 50 years. Without doubt, the phenomenon has also been supported by the popularity of interior design styles such as the Japandi, which calls for woodsy materials and earthy tones throughout its designs.

My Timeless Timber’s aesthetics emerge as an antithesis to today’s popular minimalistic products that proudly display their “pure” wood materials. Bethany Ann C.’s paintings have instead covered her timber canvas’ entire surface, overwhelming it with scenes of where similar trees once stood. This is precisely why her pieces deliver the message so effectively; it reminds people that more than anything, wood ultimately belongs in forests, and left alone by humanity.
