As the art market evolves, it pushes artists to experiment with new mediums and materials. Slava Zaitsev, a Russia-based artist, has garnered international attention for his work. He utilizes staples and multimedia collages to create his images, which are on show in Kazan. Arts Help Managing Editor Hannah Chew and the Creative Team interviewed Zaitsev to learn more about his work.
Tell me about your work. You have an interesting medium and focus on animals, why?
I like finding new materials for my art. I draw animals because I love them. I like to use my new medium to make them.
What does your creative process look like?
The process is similar to the classical construction of a drawing or painting. For my work, I go from dark spots to highlights to create space.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I just work, and inspiration finds me by itself. My main advice is to always be doing something.
What has been your favorite project and why?
My favorite project is always what I’m working with now. My experiences and emotions are still fresh, and I remember it best.
Which do you prefer: collage or staple art? Why?
I prefer collage, ordinary art is boring to me. You can mix any color and shade, with a collage everything is inlaid and is in constant flux. You don’t know which piece of color you will get on each page.
How do you use social media as an artist?
I just share with the world because I enjoy my work.
