SUSTAINABLE ART, IMPACTFUL COMMUNITY.

Running from February 20 to May 9, 2027, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is displaying the first large-scale exhibition of Marie Chouinard work, BECOMING BREATH. Chouinard is a renowned Quebecois artist, often specializing in dance, and asks questions through this work about embodied identity.

BECOMING BREATH speaks to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health and Well-Being, as Chouinard is seen reconnecting with her own body, and encouraging viewers to do the same.

According to a press release from the Montreal Museum of Fine Art, the MMFA is the first Canadian art institution to organize and showcase an exhibition from an artist who specializes in dance, an artistic practice Chouinard has been engaged in for a number of years.

Chouinard has been a leading artist in dance for approximately 50 years, with work displayed globally: from the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Paris' Musee de l'Orangerie the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and the 21st Century of Contemporary Art in Japan. But dance is not her only medium of choice, as she combines drawing, sculpture, video installation and virtual reality experiences into her performance pieces.

With the upcoming BECOMING BREATH displaying at the MMFA, Marie Chouinard not only centres herself in her body, exploring the mystery of our existence, but also comes home quite literally, displaying work in her home city.
